The practice is based in Chagford which is located at the geographic centre of the county of Devon and is strategically placed to provide a service throughout the south-west.

During the last thirty six years the practice has carried out over a thousand projects throughout Devon, Cornwall and Somerset and has extensive experience in the design of new buildings in sensitive areas and on sites of special interest, including historic building development and the conservation, repair and regeneration of existing buildings. The practice has been awarded numerous National and Regional design and conservation awards in recognition of the quality of its work.

The practice is experienced in private and public housing, ecclesiastical and public buildings, all levels of education and aspects of commercial developments.

Allen Van der Steen has formal accreditation to advise on and to carry out conservation works to historic buildings (AABC).

A significant proportion of the work of the practice is related to the finding of new uses for valuable historic building groups and buildings and sites and the understanding and repair of buildings in some of the more extreme climatic conditions of the West Country. Van der Steen Hall Architects has received recognition for the quality of its work and contribution to the built environment and in particular for creative and contemporary approaches to problem solving and design, and the integration of built structures into valuable landscapes.
